White Rock and District Garden Club's annual plant sale on its way

Attention green thumbs: Save the date for May 3

Many gardeners and green thumbs have one opinion in common: there's always room for another plant.

Those who agree will want to save the date for Saturday, May 3, for the White Rock and District Garden Club's annual plant sale, held at Ocean Park Community Hall.

The club, a fixture in the White Rock and South Surrey area for 78 years, comprises 70 enthusiastic members who prioritize the plant sale each year, as it's their largest fundraiser. Funds raised are used for guest speakers and to provide transportation to garden tours, as well as enabling the club to make a yearly donation to the local food bank, plant sale director Terry Haight said.

In addition, there's delicious baked treats to tempt greenery shoppers.

"Many of our members are seniors who have had to give up their garden, but boy can they bake!" Haight said. "Our bake table part of the sale is one of our top sellers."

Plants at the sale come from members' gardens or friends and families, which allows the club to keep the plants affordable, "because we all know how much more expensive gardening has become."

"Share what you know, show what you grow" is the longstanding club's motto, Haight continued.

In addition to plants and baked goods, there's also a flower market with beautiful arrangements, as well as related gently used items, such as gardening tools, floral puzzles and more.

"We offer very good value for your dollar — most of our plants are in the $2- to $8-dollar range, depending on size and type," Haight shared. "We have a wide variety of plants and knowledgeable members eager to help you with your selection."

The event happens from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Park Community Hall, 1577 128 St.
