Semiahmoo Peninsula Rotarians pitched in on two environmental projects last weekend, as part of the annual Rotary EPIC Day of Service.
The day is "dedicated to making a positive impact through hands-on service projects," a news release explains.
Held around the world, local clubs were among 40 in Rotary District 5050 to mobilize volunteers to lend a hand on May 17.
Described as an opportunity to "witness the true spirit of Rotary in action," Rotarians in White Rock/South Surrey supported A Rocha Canada's Regenerative Farming Spring Planting program, as well as a Shoreline Cleanup and Community Education event with the White Rock-South Surrey Climate Corps in Crescent Beach for the initiative.
The shoreline cleanup event aimed to highlight the importance of a clean shoreline to the health of creatures on both land and sea, an online description of the initiative explains.
Designed "to engage folks of all ages in a meaningful, hands-on environmental action," it included debris removal, an educational component, "and a chance to connect as a community around shared environmental values."
Rotary Club of Nature Celebrators president Stephen Crozier, describing environmental degradation as an issue that affects us all – with a disproportionate impact on the less fortunate – said "all attempts to heal nature should be celebrated."
At the A Rocha BC Centre (an 18-acre site at 1620 192 St.), volunteers helped prepare garden beds, manage weed, plant seedlings and more.
