LETTER: Bus only-lanes on Highway 99 are a win for everyone

Getting people out of single-driver cars is a good thing, this writer says

The bus-only lane on Highway 99 is a win for everyone, this letter writer says.

Editor,

I take issue with writer Ken Harrap’s comments on bus-only lanes.

Bus schedules indicate that, between 2:15 and 6 p.m., there are 20 double-decker 351 buses, nine single-decker 352s and eight 354s heading in the direction of White Rock/South Surrey using those HOV/Bus only lanes. Doing the math, that adds up to over 2,000 passengers not driving cars and adding to the pollution, confusion, and delays on Highway 99.

I am an avid bus rider and appreciate this fine service every time I travel on Highway 99 and watch the lineup of cars, with a single driver, navigate the bottleneck at the Massey Tunnel. The ride from the Park and Ride to Bridgeport is 30 minutes (sometimes less) and carefree. Another 25 minutes or so gets the rider to Waterfront Station, with plenty of connections along the way.

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.
