Editor,
Last Wednesday evening, City of Surrey held an information meeting at South Surrey recreation centre to inform residents about the proposed destruction of forest to expand the local city-owned cemetery.
I attended and asked where I could get a copy of the report, what options had been explored, and was told there was no report yet and it had not been submitted to council. Most every question I asked received that response.
I asked if this cemetery were surrounded by housing instead of forest what options would the city consider to expand the cemetery? I received no real response. I asked if the city had contacted any other municipalities as to their solutions on expansion of urban cemeteries and she did not think so.
So there is no report yet, no options considered yet, no contact with other municipalities, but their proposal is to destroy a portion of the forest.
It seems obvious that this was an optics exercise so their proposal could be taken to city council to show they have undertaken due diligence.
