For parents of children aged six to 14 who struggle with acquiring reading, comprehension, spelling and writing skills, finding affordable after-school tutoring is a challenge.

The Learning Disabilities Association – Fraser South Chapter (LDAFS) helps address this need by offering one to one tutoring in Surrey at Janice Churchill Elementary, 8226 146 St. and also in Langley, at Douglas Park Community School, 5409 206 St.

Your child will be tutored by a specially trained tutor who works under the direction of an experienced special education teacher using strategies developed to help the child with learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder or any child who is behind in reading or writing.  However, a child does not have to be diagnosed as having a learning disability to attend the tutoring program.

At least 10 to 15 per cent of the population has learning disabilities, many have difficulty learning to read and write but remain undiagnosed and not remediated.  LDAFS programs are designed to help these children by providing early intervention at an affordable fee.  In addition, some partial subsidies may be available courtesy of the CKNW Orphan’s Fund for families in financial need.

Tutoring is available from Oct. 1 to Dec. 13 and students attend for one hour sessions twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays after-school.  Please register early for the best availability of times and to book a free reading evaluation.

Free assessments area available Sept. 24.

LDAFS also offers seminars and workshops for parents and educators.  Upcoming events include a Supporting your Child’s Special Education workshop on Oct. 13  and Teaching to the Brain: Providing brain-based differentiated instruction to accommodate students with learning difficulties and disabilities presented by Dr. James B. Hale, PhD, MEd.
