Delta student third in national contest

A student from Seaquam Secondary tied for third place in a national history contest against hundreds of other students from across the country.

Delta’s Scott Peverell scored 96 per cent in The Begbie Canadian History Contest – a competition that challenges senior students to use their knowledge of Canadian history.

The contest questions are based on major events in Canadian history from 1850 to the present. The emphasis is on critical thinking skills using sources such as political cartoons, paintings, posters, graphs, maps, statistics, songs, speeches, diaries, letters, newspaper articles and memoirs.

The contest is two hours long.

Prizes of $1,000 were given for both the English and the French versions of the contest, with one prize for every 250 entrants.

All entrants received a certificate of participation, and the top entrant in each school who achieved a score of 80 per cent or more received a Begbie Contest medallion.

This year 1,365 students registered for the contest.
