Students at Jarvis Traditional Elementary School were recently treated to two after school play days as part of a fundraising initiative by Kwantlen Polytechnic University students.
As part of their sociology class, the students were tasked with raising funds to support Afretech Aid Society, a charity that helps empower African youth by providing educational opportunities.
"We thought why not involve kids in raising money for kids," said Kwantlen student Marisa Leal.
Leal's groupmate, Tony Martin, came up with the idea of approaching an elementary school to offer a fun after school program. Jarvis Traditional Elementary embraced the idea and dozens of students signed-up for two after school events.
The students gave a donation to attend the play days and were educated about what their donation will be supporting. Specifically, the money raised from the events will go towards providing scholarships and much needed school supplies to students in rural Ghana.
