Transformational Theatre Society's two-day Music and Meditation Festival returns to Bear Creek Park in Surrey this weekend (Aug. 16-17).
Tickets are sold on tickets.surrey.ca for a Friday-evening concert at Surrey Arts Centre's Mainstage, followed Saturday by a free all-day event at Bear Creek Park Garden Stage, noon to 5 p.m.
Starting at 7:30 p.m., Friday's Indian classical music concert will feature sitarist Sharanjeet Singh Mand with tabla artist Sunny Matharu, multi-instrumentalist Nirmal Nair on bansuri and guitarist Vladimir Shohov. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for youth under 18.
"Arrive early to enjoy chai and conversation with community members," says the event website (transformationaltheatre.com), "and then settle in as the ensemble creates the mood for the meditative space of the weekend ahead, facilitating sublime states of meditation through music."
Saturday's free festival is a place for multi-cultural performances "as we take a journey through different states of awareness brought about through music, from the earthy rhythms of African drumming by Benin Master Drummer, Yoro Noukoussi to the heart strings of the divine dilruba played masterfully by Baljit Singh accompanied by tabla maestro Amarjeet Singh," the website says.
"As well as meditative music, Music and Meditation in the Park will include a rhythm workshop, creative activities for children, and meditation sessions led by Sahaja Yoga BC. The event will end with the vibrant songs of the Sahaj Qawwali group."
