In Surrey, a VSO debut for 'rising star' Italian conductor/pianist

In Surrey and North Vancouver, Italian conductor and pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell makes her VSO debut with a concert program "tailored to her distinctive passion" this Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 18-19).

Franz Schubert’s Third Symphony (written months after the composer’s 18th birthday) will be performed by Vancouver Symphony Orchestra along with Philippe Schoeller's Sereno Sole (North American debut) and Béla Bartók’s Divertimento for Strings.

Sunday, the concert in Surrey starts at 7 p.m. at Bell Performing Arts Centre, with tickets sold on vancouversymphony.ca, or call 604-876-3434. Saturday's performance is at Centennial Theatre in North Van, 8 p.m. curtain.

The VSO website hypes the well-travelled Benelli Mosell ss "a rising star on the international music scene, continuously praised for her dazzling virtuosity, technical brilliance and the sensitivity of her musical insight."

The orchestra's 106th season includes five concerts at Surrey's Bell Performing Arts Centre as part of the annual Surrey Nights series, endowed by Werner and Helga Höing.

Looking ahead, the fourth and fifth concerts in the series are “Brahms & Saint-Saëns’ Cello” (March 2, conducted by Christian Kluxen with Santiago Cañón-Valencia, cello) and “Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto” (March 30, with pianist Ingrid Filter and conductor Alpesh Chauhan).
