Children and families in the Surrey school district are continuing to receive meals during the summer break, supporting more than 200 families.
Organizations and churches have been providing food to families from 23 elementary schools in the Surrey district, with 141 families from 19 schools receiving weekend food hampers and 84 families from four elementary schools receiving weekly food hampers.
"For many families across the district who rely on school meal programs during the school year, periods like summer and winter break can be an uncertain time. Summer meal support programs help bridge the gap and contribute to a continuity of stability for the families that need it, as identified by their schools," a release from Surrey Schools notes.
The school district's Feeding Futures department also runs a Food for Families program that helps provide grocery store gift cards to families who could use the financial support.
Free food was also provided to more than 6,000 students who participated in Surrey Schools' summer camps where close to 300 meals were provided.
All meals and gift cards are provided through the Surrey school district by partner agencies and donors.
