Proposed expansion designs for Surrey's Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre were revealed at an open house way back in July 2022.

Now, nearly three years later, a project management support services contract has been approved for CorePM, in the amount of $455,000.

Delayed more than two years, the project is currently in the "procurement stage," according to a March 10 report before the city council, with a contractor to be selected this spring and construction to start this fall.

The original plan was to start construction in spring 2023 and be done by 2024.

Work at the Whalley facility, on 107A Ave., will include adding a second gymnasium, fitness centre, learning kitchen, maker space, large and small multi-purpose spaces and childcare spaces.

The expansion project also involves a new entry plaza, community garden space and a grand lawn to accommodate a range of social and learning activities, the report notes.

When design plans were revealed in 2022, the project was no longer the “City Centre Sports Complex” it was previously called.

No indoor swimming pool will be included in the expansion because the initial $40-million budget didn't allow for one.

Plans call for the rec centre to double in size, to approximately 70,000 square feet, with expansion to the west of the existing structure, stretching toward the SkyTrain line.

The rec centre is named for Chuck Bailey, a baseball coach and pioneer with Whalley Little League.
