A little free pantry in uptown White Rock could use some more donations to help feed members of the community who are struggling.
Tucked on the side of the parking lot adjacent to Oceana Parc Playhouse in White Rock is a colourfully painted pantry with food items available for the taking. This community offering has been running for years, which allows struggling individuals to access the food items in the pantry on their own time, without any barrier. Those in need are able to stop by, peruse and grab what they may need, and be on their way.
Several groups and organizations help fill the pantry along with donations from residents. With Sources Food Bank, local churches, UNITI and more, the pantry typically has some items but UNITI is appealing for more to "fight against hunger."
Food items best for the pantry include canned food, baking supplies such as flour, baking powder and bread, mixes that only require water (such as pancake mixes), jarred food, dried foods, drinks, treats, pet food and also, toiletries.
The only items not accepted are opened packages, razors or other sharp items, homemade foods, expired food, unlabelled items, medications and products that contain alcohol.
UNITI staff contribute to the pantry every Friday, according to an email while individuals who would like to contribute can donate to them, to Peninsula United Church or to the pantry itself at any time.
