Police watchdog investigating fatal police-involved shooting in Surrey

Victim was pronounced dead at the scene Friday night in 13900-block of 100 Avenue

A Surrey-based police watchdog is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting in Whalley Friday (Jan. 31).

Around 9 p.m., Surrey police attended an apartment building in the 13900 block of 100 Ave to execute an arrest warrant on a person living there.

As police attempted to arrest the individual, "they reportedly confronted officers with a weapon. Officers fired weapons, including a duty pistol, and the person suffered a serious injury and did not survive, " Surrey Police Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said in a news release Saturday (Feb. 1).

Police say the individual died at the scene.

The IIO was called in to investigate. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
