A Surrey RCMP officer was stabbed while arresting a pair of suspects in a case of alleged vehicle theft.
It happened Tuesday, Nov. 5, near a Port Kells storage facility at 186 Street and 96 Avenue, according to a news release from the detachment.
"The officer sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and he was transported to hospital where he was treated and released," police say.
The incident followed a week-long investigation into alleged thefts of motor vehicles in Surrey. On Nov. 5, the RCMP Auto and Property Crime Target Team (PACTT) located a male suspect and a female associate near the storage facility. During the arrest, "the male suspect allegedly attempted to flee and stabbed one of the officers," according to the RCMP account of events.
Police say the male suspect received minor injuries during the arrest and was transported to hospital where he was treated, released and transported to Surrey RCMP Detachment. The female suspect did not sustain any injuries during the arrest.
"This is another reminder of the risk our officers face each day to serve and protect the citizens of Surrey," stated Sgt. Tammy Lobb, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer.
"Auto theft continues to be a priority for the Surrey RCMP and our dedicated team of officers who investigate these offences."
Police say Donald Smith, 28, is in custody after being charged with several offences including assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property and two counts of failure to comply with condition of release order.
Tia Appleton, 35, released with conditions, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. Both are due in court Nov. 26.
