With Jan. 29 being the day to ring in the New Year for many across the world, students in Surrey and White Rock marked the special Lunar New Year in various ways.
With lion dances, lantern-making and studying the history, the event was observed in local schools by students of all ages and backgrounds. Originating in South East Asia, Lunar New Year is the beginning of the new year based on lunar calendars and this year, Wednesday is the official day, with 2025 the Year of the Snake.
“Lunar New Year holds deep cultural significance for many of our students, parents, staff and their families throughout the district,” said JB Mahli, director of instruction for Racial Equity.
“The values of good health and fortune are shared across generations and all walks of life, and it’s an exciting time for students in our schools to find common threads in their cultural identities while recognizing the holiday.”
The school district even released a video to its website to showcase recent student initiatives observing the event.
Lunar New Year is a time of reflection for those who observe, with the Snake representing love and happiness and symbolizing rebirth and good luck.
Schools across the district introduced lessons during classes about traditions and customs that typically take place during the observance of Lunar New Year.
Additionally, schools held their own celebrations such as lion dance performances by students, traditional folk music, arts and crafts such as lantern making and wall displays now up in various schools.
