Surrey, White Rock shelters opening in extreme weather alert

Heavy rainfall is predicted all weekend from Nov. 8 to 11

Extra community-based shelters are opening in Surrey and White Rock this weekend due to heavy rains.

The Homelessness Services Association of B.C. issued an alert Friday (Nov.8) due to heavy rainfall expected in Metro Vancouver this weekend. 

Environment Canada says the weather system will bring 5 to 10 mm of rainfall overnight Friday. Rain is expected to continue throughout the morning on Saturday with up to 15 mm expected.

The following community-based shelters in Surrey and White Rock will be active from Friday (Nov. 8) through Monday (Nov. 11), according to a bulletin from the Surrey-White Rock Extreme Weather Response team.

  • Surrey Alliance Church: 13474 96th Avenue between 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The site is accessible through the breezeway entrance in the rear parking lot. No pets. For adults 19+
  • South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre EWR: 14601 20th Ave. between 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The site is accessible near the lower parking lot. The site is pet-friendly and pet accessible. For adults 19+
