Winter clothing items are needed at the South Surrey extreme weather shelter as temperatures continue to drop.

With icy cold temperatures affecting many in the province, a shelter in South Surrey is asking for donations to help those who do not have warm homes to return to.

With evenings in White Rock forecasted to be in the ranges of -3 to -8 C, the extreme weather shelter operating out of South Surrey Recreation Centre is appealing to the public for warm clothing items.

Outlining an urgent need, volunteer Kathy Booth noted that the shelter is seeing a "record number of guests seeking refuge from the cold."

And that frigid weather is not letting up, according to Environment Canada, making the call for donations even more important.

"There have been over 50 guests in the last few nights, including 11 women and 40 men," Booth explained.

For those looking to donate, the shelter is in need of gloves, warm and waterproof coats, warm pants, hoodies, hand warmers, underwear and socks.

"This community is always very generous!" Booth said, adding that donations can be dropped off at Peace Portal Alliance Church on Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., located at 15128 27b Ave in Surrey.
