Soccer provincials features stark Surrey talent

Five teams from Delta & Surrey competing in provincials this week

Surrey’s soccer supremacy will be put to the test this upcoming week during the B.C. Secondary School provincial soccer championships.

In the boys AAA bracket, four of the 16 teams in the tournament are representing Surrey. Those teams are Fleetwood Park, Panorama Ridge, L.A. Matheson and Enver Creek.

Three of those teams, Fleetwood Park, Panorama Ridge and L.A. Matheson, are returning to provincials for the second straight year.

Out of the 16 teams, L.A. Matheson finished sixth, while Panorama Ridge and Fleetwood finished 8th and 9th respectively.

There were actually five Surrey teams in provincials last year. Sullivan Heights ended up with the best finish after bowing out and finishing fourth in the bronze medal game against Oak Bay high school from Victoria.

Another Victoria team, Reynolds Secondary, went home with the provincial crown.

For L.A. Matheson and Enver Creek, they squeaked into provincials after strong finishes in the regular season. Matheson specifically made it to provincials after two dramatic wins on penalty kicks.

In one of those games, Matheson was down 2-0, before two goals and a couple of saves from goalie Kevin Saggu during penalty kicks helped solidify their place in provincials.

The battle in the AAA bracket begins on Thursday, Nov. 23rd, and it wraps up on Saturday, Nov. 25th at Burnaby Lakes Sports Complex West.

In the AA bracket, schools with smaller populations are included, which excludes most schools from Surrey.

However, North Delta Secondary did have a place in the round of 16, and they went 2-1 in their bracket, setting up a match against Brentwood College for fifth place.
