At Surrey’s Di Reggae Café, owner and chef Richie Hussett sets the scene for a memorable Caribbean meal.

Savour a taste of the Caribbean right here at home with a visit to Surrey’s Di Reggae Café.

The deliciously authentic Caribbean cuisine uses the freshest ingredients, with everything made fresh on-site, notes chef and owner Richie Hussett.

“I’ve always had a passion for cooking,” Hussett says. Paired with the opportunity to surround himself with family, friends and the local community, it’s the perfect combination.

Growing up in Jamaica, with a single dad and six older sisters, cooking with fresh island ingredients was a life lesson learned early – and one that stuck with him when the family moved to Canada.

Opening the café in 2011 fulfilled Hussett’s dream to create a family-friendly destination that feels like home – even more so now that his sister has joined him as a chef at the restaurant.

Working closely with local school, community and church groups, “we’re trying to create a real family place,” he adds.

“Caribbean cuisine really is the closest thing to a home-cooked meal and it’s unique in its flavours.”

Flavourful favourites: With so many people vacationing in the Caribbean, people are quite knowledgeable about the culture and its food, and they’re thrilled to be able to get a taste of that here at home, Hussett says. What are the must-try menu favourites?

“The oxtail and the jerk are by far our most popular dishes, along with traditional sides like Jamaican patties,” he says.

With dishes from throughout the islands, other entrees to try include include rotis, curry beef or goat and a selection of Caribbean fish dishes – be sure to check out Fish Fridays!

Sweet tooth? Indulge in sweet potato pudding or cheesecake, or try a more seasonal treat like rum cake or fruit cake.

Quench your thirst: Try a refreshing Caribbean beverage like Red Stripe, Carib or Dragon Stout beers from the fully licensed café, while younger guests will love a non-alcoholic ginger beer or pineapple soda.

Take-out temptations: While Di Reggae’s warm, colourful interior sweeps you away to the Caribbean, take-out is another popular option for those on the go. You can even call ahead to have your order ready for pick-up when you arrive.

Party time: Music is as important to Caribbean culture as the food, and a variety of special musical guests are welcomed through the year – keep up to date on their web and Facebook sites.
