Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society is marking a milestone this summer with the 20th anniversary of its Mega Job Fair, July 24 at the North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex.
The event, one of the largest of its kind in B.C., is expected to welcome more than 5,000 job seekers and over 100 exhibitors.
“We’re really excited, this year is special,” says Kanika Mehra, Director of Youth Programs and Community Services at PICS. “It’s our 20th anniversary, and we’re seeing a lot of excitement from community partners and exhibitors. Some employers who haven’t participated in years are returning and we’re adding new ones every day.”
Held twice annually, once in Vancouver and once in Surrey, the PICS Mega Job Fair brings together job seekers, recruiters, academic institutions and training organizations under one roof. Entry is free for attendees, while employers and exhibitors register through megajobfair.ca.
The fair is for newcomers, students, trained professionals and anyone currently seeking employment or exploring new opportunities. “There’s something for everyone,” says Kathleen Hughes, a career counsellor and facilitator with PICS. “Job fairs give people a chance to explore hiring trends, learn about training programs and meet potential employers face-to-face.”
Hosted in a large, centrally located venue, everything is arranged to be welcoming and accessible, Mehra says. “It’s a great platform for both sides – employers get to see who’s looking for work in their community and job seekers get direct access to hiring managers and resources.”
“It’s such a valuable connection point – it’s amazing how many walk out with on-the-spot interviews or job leads,” Hughes adds.
The event will feature a range of exhibitors, including B.C. Corrections and other major employers, as well as education and training institutions. “We want attendees to come away not just with leads, but also with information that helps them upgrade their skills and find meaningful employment,” Hughes says.
Founded in 1987, PICS Society provides a range of services to immigrants, seniors, women and youth, including employment programs, housing support and language training.
“I love being able to help people every day in their employment journeys,” Mehra says. “Anytime you can get paid to do something you love, it’s worth doing.”
