Body found in South Surrey ditch not a victim of foul play

A body found by pedestrians in the 3600-block of 176 Street on Nov. 26 was that of a man in his 50s

The identity of a body found in a South Surrey ditch last month has been determined, and foul play has been ruled out.

But officials say they have little more that can be shared publicly about the discovery.

“We will not be releasing any further details as no foul play is suspected,” Schumann told Peace Arch News by email Wednesday.

Pedestrians alerted police to the body – which was spotted in a water-filled ditch in the 3600-block of 176 Street – just before 3 p.m. Nov. 26.

Investigators with Surrey RCMP’s major crime unit, along with forensic and collision-reconstruction teams, were at the scene for several hours.

A news release issued at the time stated the deceased appeared to have been in the water “for some time.”

It’s unclear if an autopsy determined exactly how long the deceased had been there, or how it got there in the first place.

BC Coroners Service spokesperson Barb McLintock said only that the deceased was a Lower Mainland man in his early 50s, and that cause and classification of his death remain under investigation.
