Human remains found in Richmond in July have now been identified as those of a missing Surrey woman.
A media release from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) issued Wednesday (Nov. 6) has identified the remains as those of Navdeep Kaur, 28, who was reported missing by her family on Feb. 23.
On July 23, Richmond RCMP, acting on a report, found the remains in the water where Williams Road meets the Fraser River.
Richmond RCMP worked closely with the BC Coroners Service to identify the remains and determine the circumstances that led to the victim's death.
Earlier, the Surrey RCMP Missing Persons Unit had conducted an extensive investigation into Kaur's disappearance, which led investigators to believe that it may have been the result of criminality.
IHIT took charge of the case, working in close partnership with Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service.
Now that the remains have been identified as Kaur's, IHIT is continuing to follow a number of investigative avenues to determine the circumstances of her death, the release stated.
“This is a tragic event and investigators continue to work on this very active investigation," said Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi of IHIT.
" We are releasing an update with the hope that someone who knows something about Ms. Kaur’s disappearance and homicide may come forward. We’re asking anyone who has any information, to please call IHIT immediately.”
