SURREY — Paramedics were called to the WalMart parking lot in Newton on Wednesday afternoon to check on a young boy who’d been left in a locked car.

The three-year-old turned out to be fine. A shopper had tried to rouse the sleeping boy, wasn’t able to, and hailed a loss prevention officer. The mother, who had been in the store for about 20 minutes, returned and unlocked the Honda Civic.

“She realized immediately her error,” Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr said. “She’s learned her lesson.”

Carr said she’d planned just to pop into the store but got delayed in a checkout lineup.

Police said the woman was distraught and remorseful.

Carr said police don’t plan to recommend charges but he added that the Ministry of Children and Family Development was notified, as is police policy in such cases.
