COMMUTER ALERT: Schools closed, slushy road conditions

Slush and freezing snow is causing significant delays for commuters across the Lower Mainland.

Due to the overnight snow fall – that’s reportedly turned to freezing rain in some cities – university campuses are closing, and commuters are dealing with inclement conditions on roads as slush piles up.

West Coast Express is seeing delays as a tree has fallen on tracks near the Port Moody station, and service has stopped until crews can remove the debris.

Translink BC has announced for those relying on the bus to get around this morning that there are several delays for most buses, and to check on its website for specific bus delays.

The Port Mann bridge is also seeing delays as crews work to remove ice off the cables. Could potentially close in coming hours.

Meanwhile, the following university campuses are closed or delaying opening:

  • University of British Columbia:Point Grey campus is closed, and exams have been cancelled until noon. Check for updates here.
  • Simon Fraser University: Burnaby and Surrey campuses are both delayed to open at noon. Next update expected at 9:30 a.m. Check for updates here.
