Council considers selling municipal land to fund new arts facility in North Delta

Delta council is considering selling the Firehall Centre for the Arts to fund its replacement; land would be used for apartment development.

The Corporation of Delta is looking at selling off the existing Firehall Centre for the Arts and the land it sits on to pay for a replacement facility.

If the plan goes ahead, the municipality-owned land at 11489 84 Avenue would be sold to H. Sharma & Associates Inc., merged with the property next door — 11503 84 Avenue — and developed into two multi-family apartment buildings. The development would range in height from four to six storeys, adding 104 units to the area as well as an indoor amenity space.

On June 20, council voted unanimously to begin the public consultation process and to authorize an application to subdivide off approximately 0.29 hectares (0.71 acres) of municipally-owned property. Delta CAE George Harvie told council at the time that money from the sale of the land would be used to construct the new arts and cultural centre on the North Delta Recreation Centre site.

Council also voted unanimously to award John M. Bingham Architect Inc. & D. Michael Hill Architect Inc. (Bingham Hill Architects) a $112,255 contract for preliminary design of a performing arts centre in North Delta.

The corporation has sent area residents a public notice advising them of the proposed development, which will require amending the official community plan and re-zoning the site.

The notice also states the application is at a preliminary stage and aspects of the proposal may change as it proceeds through the review process before going to council for their consideration.

A public information meeting will be held to discuss this development application on Wednesday, July 20 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the North Delta Recreation Centre.
