Delta Idol sings into its second year

DELTA — The second installment of Delta Idol is ramping up to hear 10 singers compete in a youth talent contest.

Held at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre this Friday (Feb. 27), singers between the ages of 12 and 17 will be performing the Delta Idol Live Finals starting at 7 p.m. for a chance at a grand prize.

“The point of it is, we’ve got a lot of talented youth in our community and I wanted to give them another avenue for them to compete in a contest,” Jacqueline Hamlin, recreation programmer for Delta, told the Now.

The grand prize is four hours in the studio with Fresh Air Studios and Creative Inc. The lucky winner gets to record a song of their choice.

“This year we had about 18 auditions,” Hamlin said, noting that the auditions were submitted as YouTube or audio links rather than in-person.

Hamlin and a team narrowed it down to a top 10, with five of the finalists being repeat contestants from the first Delta Idol.

This year’s finalists are Kate Yahn, Isabelle Pribula, Emily Brain, Trista-monet Lang, Lannea Neibuhr, Kate Lastoria, Allison Kelly, Emily Cocking, Madison Gilette and Marika Lyszczyk.

A panel of three judges will choose the first, second and third place winners, and last year’s younger category victor, Connor Nelson, will be coming back for a special performance.

Tickets to the finals are $10 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 604-943-9437.
