A 66-year-old Delta man has passersby and police to thank, after they came to his rescue Monday night on Highway 10 and 144 Street in Surrey.

Around 7:20 p.m., an off-duty Surrey police officer was flagged down by a member of the public who noticed a male driver appeared to be in medical distress.

That driver, who had brought his vehicle to a stop in the westbound lane, was carefully removed from his vehicle by the officer and a second passerby, and they then began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Before being taken to hospital, an automated external defibrillator was also used on the man numerous times.

The Delta man is currently doing well and is breathing on his own, Surrey Mounties said in a press release.

“The quick response by the attending officers and civilians were absolutely vital to such a positive outcome,” Surrey RCMP Sgt. Alanna Dunlop said. “This incident also serves as another reminder to the public about how important it is to have basic first aid training.”
