Driver sentenced to two years in death of Surrey couple

Alberta crash also claimed the life of a third senior.

An Alberta man has been sentenced to two years in prison for a crash that killed Surrey's Rita and Ian McGillivray

The man who who caused a crash that killed a Surrey couple in Alberta in 2009 has been sentenced to two years in jail.

Euart Elmer McEwan pleaded guilty to three counts of dangerous driving causing death in October and received his sentence Tuesday (Jan.25) in Wetaskiwin Provincial Court.

Surrey's Rita McGillivray and her husband Ian, as well as Rita's mother Maria Zetson, were killed in a multi-vehicle crash near Leduc, Alberta on July 21, 2009. The local couple were in Alberta to visit Zetson, who resided in Camrose.

The three were driving along the highway when they were hit by a truck. Police said a Dodge Ram truck driven by McEwen went off the shoulder of the road and veered sharply, crossing the centre line and hitting the McGillivray car head-on.
