ELECTION 2015: Voter turnout spikes

Monday night's election saw the highest percentage of people heading to the polls since 1993.

The electorate came out in droves during Monday’s federal election as the country saw more than 68 per cent of registered voters cast a ballot.

It’s a seven-per-cent leap over the turnout in the election four years ago, and the highest turnout since 1993, when it was 61.1 per cent.

Preliminary figures show show 68.49 per cent of eligible voters (17,546,697 people) showed up to the polls Monday.

Locally, turnout was spread out.

The highest turnout was in Delta, where 75.1 per cent of voters showed up. It was followed by South Surrey-White Rock at 74 per cent, Cloverdale-Langley City (70.2 per cent), Surrey-Newton (68.6), Fleetwood-Port Kells (65.6) and Surrey-Centre (61.3).

The turnout in B.C. for this election was 70.36 per cent.
