A family of three, including a toddler, were taken to hospital with minor injuries Thursday evening after being struck by a car as they crossed 160 Street in South Surrey.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m., as the mother, father and three-year-old boy attempted to cross the road in the 2700-block, in front of Southridge School.
Police say the area was busy due to an event at the school that evening – Southridge hosted an open house from 6-8:30 p.m. – and that the injured pedestrians were wearing dark clothing and crossing the street mid-block when they were hit by a blue, northbound sedan.
The vehicle's windshield was significantly damaged by the impact. The driver, a 46-year-old South Surrey resident, remained at the scene.
Police say drugs, alcohol and speed do not appear to have been factors in the collision; witnesses are asked to contact the Surrey RCMP detachment at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Police say the collision is a reminder to the public to be more vigilant, both as pedestrians and drivers, with winter approaching and more inclement weather and earlier nightfall.
When walking at night, pedestrians are advised to wear light-coloured or reflective clothing, ensure they make eye contact with drivers before crossing the road, and always cross in a well-lit crosswalk; drivers should watch for pedestrians crossing both in and outside of marked crosswalks.
