Twelve people displaced after fire rips through Surrey townhouse complex

Surrey Fire says two townhouses were completely destroyed

Twelve people were displaced after fire ripped through a townhouse complex on Canada Day, according to Surrey Fire Service.

It happened shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, July 1 in the 15500-block of 89th Avenue.

“There were townhouses, two units, involved in a four-townhouse block,” said Battalion Chief Spiro Pegios. “Two townhouses were completely destroyed but the other two unit were saved.”

In all, 12 people were displaced but Pegios said four among them can return after fire investigators wrap up at the scene Tuesday.

So far, the cause of the fire is unknown.

“It was a challenging fire in the fact that when we got there it was already into the roof, attic area. And, there was restricted access because there was a bottleneck in the driveway. But we had decent enough access.”

Pegios said there were minor injuries “involving a cut hand and some smoke inhalation but other than that everybody else is OK.”

A Black Press freelancer at the scene said a command post was set up at the adjacent Northwood United Church.

The blaze let to road closures along to north and southbound traffic on 156th Street. The road was blocked at 90th Avenue to the north and 88th Avenue to the south.

The public was told to avoid the area Monday.
