Former cop spokesman suspended

SURREY – A high-ranking RCMP officer who was once Surrey RCMP’s spokesman has been suspended with pay but the police force has not revealed why. Insp. Tim Shields was suspended effective May 19, related to an RCMP Code of Conduct investigation.

Shields was Surrey RCMP’s media liaison officer for several years, a little more than a decade ago.

Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, a spokesman for RCMP “E” Division, noted ongoing Code of Conduct

investigations are subject to the Privacy Act.

“Suspensions are one of a number of administrative steps available to the force pending the outcome of the matter,” Vermeulen said. “They are not a disciplinary measure.” Tom Zytaruk
