Two live grenades had to be blown up Thursday evening in a controlled explosion in east Vancouver, police say.

The bomb disposal squad took care of the devices after they were discovered in a vehicle during a traffic stop.

Acting Sgt. Brian Montague has issued a release saying officers responding to reports of a suspicious person found a 33-year-old Surrey man in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

The man was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked truck and Montague says further checks revealed he was a prohibited driver.

Brass knuckles, throwing knives, a tactical vest and the hand grenades were also found in the truck.

X-rays of the grenades confirmed they were active, so they were detonated in a nearby school field and Montague says police will be seeking multiple charges against the suspect, who remains in custody.
