SURREY — Some popular B.C.-raised musical talent will headline festivals here this year to help the city celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation.
Pop-rock band Hedley, led by Surrey-raised singer Jacob Hoggard, will perform at Surrey's annual Canada Day party on July 1 at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Cloverdale, city officials announced today (Feb. 21) during a "Canada 150" event at city hall.

Elsewhere this summer, Victoria-raised pop singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado will headline the annual Fusion Festival, to take place at Holland Park on the weekend of July 22-23.
On April 22, Surrey's annual Party for the Planet event, held in celebration of Earth Day, will feature Vancouver musician Shawn Hook, best known for his pop hit, "Sound of Your Heart."

All three of the festivals are free for the public to attend.
Special "Canada 150" zones will be incorporated at every major event held in Surrey this year, Mayor Linda Hepner also announced. The zones will showcase our nation's history and will include a variety of themed activities.
New this year is a Dominion Days festival set to take place at Historic Stewart Farm in South Surrey on July 1 and 2.
"Surrey will be celebrating the best of our country and our people," Hepner said. "I am delighted that our signature events will have major headliners who are not only first-rate artists in their own right, but they are all homegrown talent from B.C.
"Celebrations like this truly make our city and our country so magnificent by bringing families and our community together. Our events, as always, are free to the public and tailor-made for festival-goers of all ages."
