Two of 13 former Kwantlen Student Association (KSA) directors who were impeached late last year are suing the student group.
Gary Singh Dhaliwal and Balninna Kaur Sandhu (known as Nina Kaur) filed a civil suit in B.C. Supreme Court last week saying that the meeting Nov. 30 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Surrey campus, during which they were ousted from office, should be declared null and void.
The special meeting drew more than 350 students who voted unanimously to have certain directors expelled from office, as well as numerous others placed in bad standing, meaning they could never run for the KSA again.
The list of removed executives includes Dhaliwal and Kaur, as well as Sean Bassi (who went by Sean Birdman when he was KSA president), Nipun Pandey, Bobby Padda, Jaspinder Ghuman, Tarun Takhar, Shivinder Grewal, Money Dhaliwal, Gaven Pangly, Simmy Grewal, Kamalpreet Dha, Karamveer Dhillon and Jagraj Hayer.
The suit by Kaur and Dhaliwal claims the meeting "was not properly called, constituted and conducted... and is therefore a nullity," making their removal invalid and their reinstatement justified.
Political barbs began flying at the university after it was discovered some members of the KSA elected early last year are related to former director Aaron Takhar, including his sister Justine Franson and Kaur, his cousin. The KSA had a longstanding lawsuit against Takhar, which was dropped in October. Franson had resigned prior.
Takhar is among the dozen people placed in bad standing during a vote at November's special meeting.
Kaur and Dhaliwal applied to have their case expedited last Friday, but their request was dismissed by the court.
The allegations have not been proven in court and a statement of defence has not been filed by the current KSA.
