Operators of Dell Lanes have announced the closure of the bowling alley, a landmark business in Whalley for more than 60 years.

“It is with great sadness that we were informed late tonight that the landlord (BOSA) is locking us out,” staff posted to the bowling alley’s Facebook page early Tuesday, March 19.

“We have tried to work hard with Bosa thru covid and beyond but they were very generous and gave us one months rent reprieve for covid,” the post continued.

Dell Lanes Ltd. owed more than $186,000 in rent to the landlord, The Dells Holdings Ltd., according to a notice posted to the door and shared on social media. The notice identifies Tom Cooper as indemnifier of the bowling alley, 10576 King George Blvd.

The post on Dell Lanes’ Facebook page says it’s hard to survive in today’s economy, “with the interest rates being high and food costs climbing along with wages up considerably.

“We are a (casualty) of covid and a government that really wasn’t here to help us survive their bad decisions. Landlords not having to reduce their rent when we were restricted to 25% of our business, trying to make up over $17,000 a month rent, is tough.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and we are sorry we couldn’t stay open for many more. We are officially locked out and out of business. Take care everyone and please help the 19 staff members find jobs. They are all great people.”

The home page on delllanes.ca proclaims: “We are now closed and will not be reopening.”

Four years ago, in February 2020, Dell Lanes was among four Surrey businesses recognized during the Diamond Anniversary Awards hosted by the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association.

“The Dell Lanes bowling alley has provided North Surrey residents and visitors with over 60 years of affordable, family-friendly entertainment,” noted a news release from the BIA.

“The Dell Lanes has undergone numerous changes over the years, including the addition of a licensed lounge and full kitchen, live karaoke nights and Cosmic Bowling, all while offering bowling leagues for all skill levels. Many Surrey residents fondly remember celebrating birthdays, get-togethers and fundraising events at Dell Lanes over the years.”

In May 2020, operators appealed to bowlers for spare cash to help keep the game alive there, after a COVID-triggered closure, when more than a dozen staff members were laid off. Manager Kayla Cooper launched an online fundraiser for the business on behalf of her family, which had then operated the bowling alley for close to 18 years.
