SURREY — Getting cozy doesn’t necessarily mean slipping into a Snuggie and 100 per cent wool socks by the fire. In the heat of summer, that might be the opposite of “cozy”.

Instead, what you should be slipping into is a light, fun mystery novel, also known as “cozies”. Typified by their quirky characters, small-town settings and light-hearted mystery plots, a cozy novel is a work of detective fiction with themes such as cooking, baking, knitting and more. The books can even feature extras like recipes and patterns.

Surrey Libraries has compiled a list of cozy mysteries on its website, and people can either check-out a hardcopy or an e-book from the library.

Below are a couple of their favourites:

Candy Coated Series by Nancy Coco:

“On an island in Michigan, Allie Murphy, a Chicago candy-maker, is determined to make a success of the hotel and fudge shop she inherited from her grandfather.  A local murder and the acquisition of a precocious bichon-poo, Mal, make Allie’s life-changing very interesting.  Coco also includes fudge recipes.”

Glee Club Mysteries by Joelle Charbonneau:

“Prospect Glen High School’s newest singing coach, Paige Marshall, encounters murder and sabotage in addition to the usual glee club challenges.  Follow the struggling opera singer as she attempts to launch her own career while helping her vocal teens achieve success.”

Manor House Mystery by Julie Hyzy:

“Do historic homes catch your interest?  Meet Grace Wheaton, new curator and estate manager at Marshfield Manor.  Not only is she responsible for the artifacts restoration, grounds maintenance and tourist initiatives, but also the occasional murder.”

Stained Glass Mystery by Jennifer McAndrews:

“After some major life changes, Georgia returns to her grandfather’s house in a quiet small town and attempts to rebuild her life.  Suddenly, a murder leaves Georgia’s grandfather as the primary suspect and Georgia refocuses!”
