NEW WESTMINSTER — A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting to shooting and killing 21-year-old Noel Jackson almost two years ago.

During an appearance in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Wednesday, Jonathan Michael Kishimoto pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm. He was initially charged with second-degree murder.

On May 3, 2012, a small group of people gathered in the basement suite of a home in the 12400-block 70th Avenue in Surrey after going to a local bar. An argument broke out and two men left the residence.

The two men returned a short time later with a gun and Jackson was shot. Jackson, who had recently moved to B.C. from Ontario, died before emergency crews arrived.

Kishimoto and a second man, Michael Alexander Ross, were arrested and charged six months later.

Ross was charged with second-degree murder, but after a preliminary inquiry last April was ordered to stand trial on a charge of being an accessory to murder after the fact.

That charge was stayed during Wednesday’s court appearance and there are no outstanding charges against Ross.

Kishimoto was credited for time served, leaving eight years, four months in his sentence.
