Mayor Linda Hepner said she was horrified at the recent spate of murders that took three young lives in Surrey.
Three young people were killed in a span of eight days earlier this month.
On Wednesday, Dec. 10, eight-year-old Teagan Batstone was found dead in the trunk of a car in South Surrey. Her mother, Lisa Deanne Batstone, has been charged with her murder.
Then on Saturday, Dec. 13, 15-year-old Dario Bartoli was swarmed by group, beaten and killed. His killers are still at large.
On Thursday, Dec. 18, Jaylen Sandhu, 17, was stabbed to death in Guildford. His killer is also still at large.
The number of homicides in Surrey this year is now the fourth highest in the city’s history. Last year was the deadliest year with 25 murders, followed by 21 homicides in 2005, and in 2009, there were 20 killings in Surrey.
Hepner said any murder is completely unacceptable.
“Any death by a violent means in this city is one too many,” Hepner said Tuesday. “The death of any young person, as a mother, I can’t imagine a harder cross to bear.”
She said as a mom and a mayor she is “broken-hearted.”
