Most of 773 tickets Surrey RCMP handed out were for speeding

SURREY — Surrey Mounties handed out 773 tickets during Canada Road Safety Week.

The traffic law enforcement campaign ran from May 12 to 18. Of all the tickets dealt, 211 were speeding, 78 were for talking on a cell phone or texting, and 44 were for impaired driving related to drugs and-or alcohol.

“We were hopeful the effect of the extra enforcement activities would reduce the number of serious motor vehicle incidents,” said Sgt. Gary Clarke, of Surrey RCMP’s Traffic Enforcement Unit. “Although it’s impossible to measure what injuries or fatalities were prevented by our intervention, it’s safe to say the efforts by the Surrey RCMP ensured more motorists and pedestrians got home safely to their families.”
