Mountie to stand trial

Off duty officer involved in fatal car accident

Cpl. Benjamin "Monty" Robinson will stand trial on an obstruction of justice charge related to the October 2008 crash in Tsawwassen that killed 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson.

At a preliminary inquiry held last week a Surrey provincial court judge determined the RCMP officer will go to trial. His trial date is expected to be set May 19.

Robinson was off-duty when his Jeep collided with Hutchinson's motorcycle at Gilchrist Drive and 6 Avenue. He left the scene of the incident and walked home, where he claimed to have consumed two shots of vodka to calm his nerves before returning to the crash site.

According to Delta Police, Robinson's breath samples gave readings of .12 and .10 mgs of alcohol (the legal limit is .08). Delta Police recommended charges of impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death. Crown Counsel approved an obstruction of justice charge.

A coroner's toxicological analysis also reported alcohol in Hutchinson's blood.
