An alert neighbour is being cited for potentially saving the lives of two women who were in a home when someone set it ablaze.

At about 9 p.m. Wednesday, a home at 9076 162 Street in Fleetwood was set on fire. The family who lived upstairs was not at home, but two women, who witnesses say were both deaf, were in the basement.

Police say a neighbour saw the blaze and was able to rescue the women.

Surrey RCMP Drew Grainger said the police have a suspect and that he is in custody on another charge.

The investigation continues.
