A fire Wednesday afternoon near Cloverdale looked like a bigger deal than it was, officials say.

Surrey deputy fire Chief Dan Barnscher said crews were dispatched to the 16200-block of Highway 10 around noon March 4, after the occupant of an agricultural property reported that a small fire had gotten out of control.

"It was just a brush-slash-grass fire," Barnscher told Peace Arch News, noting the property is home to a dog kennel. "No buildings involved, no injuries to humans or animals."

Witnesses estimate up to three acres of property burned.

Five tankers were used to truck water in to fight the fire, which took just over two hours to snuff.

"It probably looked like a fairly large, involved fire, but in actual fact it was just grass burning," Barnscher said. "From overhead, it would have looked like a major event."

Barnscher said investigation will include determining the source of the fire and whether it was a legal burn.
