A man is in hospital after being shot by police in Surrey on Thursday evening.
Dean Fix was at 148 Street and 108 Avenue just after 4:30 p.m. when he saw a blue police car come "screaming right in with lights flashing" up to another vehicle.
Officers got out of their car and drew their weapons, pointing them in the direction of a Subway Restaurant in the area.
"Police," he recalls them saying. "Get out of the car."
Moments later, Fix said he heard the "pop" of a gun going off, then heard the screaming of a man yelling, "No more shooting."
Don Brookes was also nearby and heard the bang of a gunshot. He heard what he assumed was a the gunshot victim shouting, "it hurts."
Then after the shot, he heard an officer say "freeze," he said.
He said he didn't hear any yelling before the shot.
Brookes said he believes there's a fair amount of drug activity in the neighbourhood, but says it's usually pretty quiet.
Fix said a lot goes through one's mind while witnessing gunplay, but he felt grateful the police were there.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been called in to investigate the shooting.
IIO's Ralph Krenz said in a news release that it appears a member of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement B.C. Uniformed Gang Enforcement Unit fired into the car, striking the man.
The investigation continues.
