‘Now-Leader’ earns five provincial Ma Murray journalism awards

Four staff members recognized Saturday in Richmond

SURREY — Four Now-Leader staff members were recognized in Richmond on Saturday with five Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards.

Reid’s “Narcan on Heaven’s Door” series won gold for Best Feature Series. In her three-part series, Reid delved into the difference the drug Narcan is making on Surrey’s streets.

It’s noteworthy that 10 days after Reid’s series concluded, on April 14, the province declared the situation a public health emergency.SEE ALSO: Black Press papers shine at Ma Murrays

Simpson also earned gold for Best Sports Feature, with his article headlined “Surrey sisters in sync.” His story, written from a first-person perspective, featured Surrey twins Julie and Christina Sevsek, Cloverdale athletes who are destined for greatness in the world of track and field.

Also, Reid and Simpson both earned silver in the Online Innovation category for their online telling of Brent Burgher’s story. On the Now-Leader’s website, “Being Brent” used words, photos and video to detail the emotional story of a Cloverdale man with Tourette’s syndrome who faces difficult challenges every day in his community.

Now-Leader reporter Rick Kupchuk also earned bronze for his work on a Surrey Leader feature on fentanyl in the streets. He shared the award with Kevin Diakiw, Sheila Reynolds, Evan Seal and Paula Carlson.

Finally, Now-Leader reporter Tom Zytaruk was honoured with a Silver Quill award, which recognizes journalists with more than 25 years experience in the field.

The winners were announced April 29th during the Ma Murray Awards Gala on at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
