Two people – including one pulled from a submerged car – were taken to hospital following a serious crash at Highway 10 (56 Avenue) and 168 Street Tuesday evening.

According to Surrey RCMP, police were alerted to the crash at approximately 9:20 p.m. Two members of the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) “happened upon an accident scene where one vehicle went off the road into a large water filled ditch.”

“This vehicle was soon fully submerged,” a news release issued early Wednesday states.

“The two IRSU members immediately jumped into the water and pulled the lone occupant out of the car and were performing CPR until Ambulance arrived to transport the individual to hospital.”

One witness described a heavily-damaged vehicle in the roadway and another sinking in the roadside ditch.

After pulling one occupant from the water, rescue crews entered the ditch to check for more victims, the witness told Peace Arch News.

Officers with Surrey’s Criminal Collision Investigative Team (CCIT) were deployed to try and determine cause of the crash, and the intersection was closed in all directions.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the 27-year-old driver of the submerged vehicle remained in hospital in critical condition, while the driver of the second vehicle, a 21-year-old man, had been released from hospital.

Police said one man was arrested at the scene, however, he was later released pending further investigation.

Factors that led to the collision had not been determined as of PAN’s press deadline Wednesday afternoon. CCIT officers want to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have dash-cam video that could assist the investigation. Call 604-599-0502.
