While many vow to quit smoking or get in shape this year, some passionate Surrey parents have a very different New Years resolution.
Surrey Students Now have mailed their resolution to politicians of various stripes and levels, vowing to continue their advocation for more schools in the city.
“We promise to keep advocating for more schools in Surrey and for the city to develop responsibly,” the group said in a statement. “We ask our politicians to do the same. It’s time for our children to be learning in school buildings, not portables. It’s time for our children and their education to be the priority.”
The provincial treasury board, Surrey MLAs, the Minister of Education, Premier Christy Clark, as well as all Surrey City Council were all sent a card.

“Surrey School District has 7,000 students in portables,” one of the card states. “At the pace we are growing we will have 10,000 students in portables in five short years. You hold the cards to ensuring schools are in place before development occurs. Surrey students need to be in schools, not portables.”
