Police search for man after South Surrey student assaulted in park

Safety notice sent to Earl Marriott Secondary parents

Surrey police have issued an advisory and an appeal for information after an Earl Marriott Secondary student reported being grabbed by a man this morning in a nearby park.

In a news release issued just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, police say the assault occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m.

“Surrey RCMP received a report of a female student who was on her way to school when she was grabbed by an unknown male on a foot path near Earl Marriott Secondary,” the release states.

“The 14-year-old victim managed to free herself from the suspect and run to the school.”

The release – titled “Police seeking information after assault on student” – notes that both general-duty and youth-unit officers were dispatched to the area, however, they were unable to locate the assailant, who is described as a medium-build, five-foot-nine to five-foot-10 Caucasian man in his 30s.

“The suspect fled prior to police arrival and has not been located.”

The suspect was wearing a light green T-shirt, dirty blue jeans and work boots, the release states.

Police say the student was not physically injured but “is understandably upset by the incident.”

Principal Claudine Davies advised parents of the incident in a letter that was distributed by email just before noon.

In the letter, emailed just before noon, Davies said the incident is “an opportunity to provide a reminder about walking safety tips for all students.”

Those school-safety tips included don’t take short cuts, walk with friends and trust your instincts.

The police investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that could help identify the suspect is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-8477 or solvecrime.ca
