Police hunting for suspect in smash and grab at cell phone store in Newton

SURREY — Police are hunting for a man who smashed a stolen SUV into a Virgin Mobile store in Newton early Tuesday morning after he tried unsuccessfully to get in the regular way.

He got back into the GMC Envoy, threw it in reverse and crashed through the store front, wedging the vehicle inside the hole he made. He then crawled through the sun roof and ran away.

The attempted  smash-and-grab happened at about 1 a.m., at 12899-80th Ave.

"It's unclear whether anything has been stolen at this point," Surrey RCMP Sgt. Paul Hayes said.
