Proponents behind an application to release emissions from a new rubber plant in South Surrey's Campbell Heights have planned a community information meeting for next week to share more details about the facility and address questions and concerns.
According to a March 25 email from Weir Canada's general manager, Ricky Nolan, the meeting is to take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. April 4 at East Kensington Elementary.
Weir first submitted an air quality permit application to Metro Vancouver in August 2016. At the time, it was projected the 18933 34A Ave. plant would have annual emissions totaling 42 tonnes.
Public feedback led to a modification of processes, Nolan's email states. That was followed by a revised permit application that projected emissions at 2.49 tonnes per year.
Residents of South Surrey and Langley who have expressed concern to Peace Arch News say zero emissions is the only acceptable proposal.
Next Tuesday's meeting is described as an opportunity to meet the Weir team and representatives from Metro Vancouver, hear more about the facility, learn about results of the technical studies and permit application, receive an overview of Metro's permitting process and ask questions.
Metro officials told PAN earlier this month that the public meeting will likely be what's considered the last date in the notification phase, but not the last opportunity for public comment on the permit application. That does not close until a decision is made, environmental regulation and enforcement division manager Ray Robb said by email.
